County Sligo

Fri 25-Jul 03	Swords - Co. Sligo - Ballyshannon (Co. Galway)

For the second week in a row Jason had a full weekend - three days in fact (had Friday and Sunday scheduled off; took Saturday as annual leave).  Picked up a rental car (of course!) and flipped a coin to decid where to go - honestly!  Headed towards Sligo and would make the rest up as we went along.

Stopped briefly at Mullingar on the way to look at the Pewter Centre.  Some pretty river and lakeside towns along the N4 through the midlands to Sligo, but in general reasonably mediocre scenery.  However this all changed as we got closer to Sligo with lots of mountains in the background.

Drove along the edge of Lough Arrow and then onto a few back roads (progressively more like farm tracks) to see the Carrowkeel Passage Tomb Cemetery in the Brickslieve Mountains overlooking the lough - 14 cairns etc with panoramic views.  It had been raining while driving along the tracks, stopped while we got out to look around, and then started again when got back in the car, which was perfect timing!

On the way back out said hello to some old donkeys at a 'Donkey Retirement Home', although from the amorous activities they were trying out on each other (NOT us!) I don't think they were ready for retirement quite yet!

Headed towards Sligo town and went to Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery (starting to sound like a morbid trip away!), with over 60 stone circles, cairns, passage tombs, dolmens etc.  Interesting, but we had expected to be more impressed by this than by Carrowkeel, but the opposite was true!

Could see Knocknarea Cairn in the distance on Strandhill - must be enormous because still looked large from where we were!

After a few detours due to a Westlife concert (^$"!%^&*%^) eventually found and did a circuit of Lough Gill.  Another very picturesque lake, of which Ireland has many!

Parkes Castle, Lough Gill, Co. Leitrim (but near Sligo)

Next headed further north and detoured to Glencar Lough and Waterfall, with views of Benbulben and the Dartry mountains.

Further north we went out to Mullaghmore and then to Creevykeel Court Tomb.  Stayed in Ballyshannon for the night (we were now in Co. Donegal).
